A top level meeting is scheduled to be held on Monday morning at Jamaica House involving representatives of private sector groups and government agencies to discuss the rehabilitation of the downtown Market District.

The parties will also discuss plans for the repair of the Coronation Market which was extensively damaged during the recent unrest in West Kingston.

General Manager of the Urban Development Corporation (UDC) Joy Douglas says members of the private sector have expressed a strong interest in development plans for the area.

“The work will continue on the Coronation Market, there is now a very strong private sector interest in working on the Coronation Market in particular and the market district in general and so additional meetings are going to be held,”

“There is a meeting scheduled for 7:30 at Jamaica House with private sector leaders and government agencies such as the Urban Development Corporation and we will now be charting a way forward for a greater private sector role in the restoration of Coronation Market and the market district,” Ms. Douglas said.

During a tour of the Coronation Market last Thursday Prime Minister Bruce Golding said the government had plans to transform the market district as part of the redevelopment of downtown Kingston.

Repairs to the market could cost up to $100 million.
