The captains of three of the teams participating in the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) regional four-day championship, have expressed disappointment with the recent move to reduce the competition from two rounds to one.
Speaking on arrival at the Norman Manley International Airport yesterday Daren Ganga, Darren Sammy and Floyd Reifer, the respective skippers for Trinidad and Tobago, Windward Islands and Combined Colleges and Campuses (CCC), said that after a successful competition last year players were looking forward to a similar format this time, only to be told that the number of matches per team will be reduced from 12 to six.

"Players want to play more cricket and I think it is unfortunate we will not be able to play as many games as we did last year," said Ganga, whose charges claimed the regional one-day title in Guyana last year and are looking for the double.
"Two rounds of cricket give opportunities to players, especially young ones, to showcase their skills, but at the end of the day it's not our call," he added.
"We would love to play as much cricket as we can as that's the way you improve," said Sammy, whose team finished runners-up last season and hope to go one better this time around.

"As you know here in the Caribbean two or three matches could be rained out and that would be it for the season for a number of players," he added.
Reifer, in the meantime, said he hopes the board reconsider its decision next season.
"I hope that for next year the West Indies Cricket Board will look to go back to two rounds of cricket, as, for us, that was ideal and it gave a number of young players (opportunities) to develop and expose their skills," said Reifer.
The WICB noted economic constraints as the reason for change.
In a release issued by the board, chief executive officer Dr Ernest Hilaire said the board wanted to extend the season, but with other development programmes planned it was difficult to do so this year.

"The WICB has limited resources which have been further affected by the global economic crisis. This places a major challenge to balance the critical components of a cricket development programme with the limited resources that are available in the present circumstances. These circumstances may change in the short term but until then the WICB has to be responsible," said the release.
A number of regional administrators, the West Indies Players Association (WIPA) and past players - including Andy Roberts, Winston Benjamin and Curtly Ambrose - have criticised the move, saying that with West Indies cricket at its current state, players needed to be playing more cricket, not less, and the board should have found other alternatives to maintain the two rounds.
