A Japanese national was fined yesterday, when he pleaded guilty to drug charges in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court.
Takuya Nakamura, who was aided by an interpreter as he could not speak English, was also remanded on an assault charge.
According to the allegation, the accused man beat the complainant and when apprehended by the police had in his possession one ounce of ganja and a chillum pipe.
The interpreter was instructed by Nakamura, that he beat the complainant out of self defence. The accused man told the court that he was initially attacked by the complainant and then retaliated in self-defence.
Nakamura was fined $100 or 10 days at hard labour for ganja possession and for possession of a chillum pipe, while the accused was fined $2,000 or 30 days in prison.
With regards to the assault charge, he was remanded until November 5 when the medical certificate will be available.
