A 45-year-old man on the run for two years after being implicated in the death of his mother was shot dead by police on Friday.

Edgar McDonald, otherwise known as 'Indian', 'Pupa', or 'Eddie', was killed during a reported shoot-out with the police in a section of Gordon Town, St Andrew, known as 'Sugar Loaf'.

Reports are that about 11:20 p.m., personnel from the St Andrew North and Area Five police were conducting an operation in the community.

The team reportedly went to a premises where they were greeted with gunfire.

Further reports are that during the gun battle four member of the police team were shot and injured. They were treated at hospital and have been released.

McDonald was also shot and died on the spot. A 9mm pistol was reportedly taken from his body.

Investigators say McDonald was placed on the nation's list of most wanted men following the 2007 murder of his mother, the killing of another man few months later, and other crimes committed in Gordon Town.

Crime Chief for the division, Deputy Superintendent Altermoth 'Parro' Campbell, said McDonald was alleged to have shot his mother in her mouth, killing her on the spot during an argument at their home in Gordon Town.

In addition to that and another murder in 2008, McDonald was placed on the most wanted list after being linked to several crimes committed in the the community
