The Wyndham Hotel in Kingston, was transformed into 'techno-land' over the weekend with the staging of The Gleaner sponsored Digicel Consumer Electronics Show.
Scores of persons turned out for the event to see the large display of new technology being offered at the various booths.
The Digicel 4G technology booths were by far the most visited, as persons were very eager to try out the new technology.
At the Digicel GSM booth, displays of some of the phones available were present, with persons having the option of purchasing them or signing up for other services offered by Digicel.
Another hit among the patrons was the Watts New booth which was transformed into a lounge where persons could check out their new 3D technology. And while watching 3D television with Samsung 3D glasses, children and adults alike enjoyed watching the movie Monsters vs Aliens 3D as they marvelled at how beautiful the graphics on the television appeared.
Blake Spence, an 11-year-old gamer, who was having fun on a play station 3 game said, "I like it, it's cool and it looks good."
The University of the West Indies (Mona), Geographic Information Systems had amazing GPS technology at their booth and also had a natural hazard simulation programme which gave users an idea of what would happen if a natural disaster occurred. The user chooses information on their house (construction material, soil type etc.), the type and particulars of the disaster and the simulation shows the expected damage.
Standing out
Another standout at the show was the University of Technology's invention of an automatic dropout switch, which can be used to turn on or off, the power to a light pole from anywhere in the world using programmable logic control (PLC) software.
So if a light pole was damaged and the risk of fire exists, or worse case scenario, if that pole was located in a remote location, the power to the light pole could be switched off instantly by simply going on your phone or computer and accessing the software to turn off the power. Representatives at the booth said they had already showed the technology to the Jamaica Public Service Company and they hope it can be put to use in Jamaica soon.
Excitement
Fame FM's booth had a lot of the day's excitement, as they had the 'Moments of Fame', where persons got the chance to voice commercials and also sing their favourite songs which were put on a CD and given back to the singer. Giveaways of Digicel's 4G modems also kept the patrons stationed at the booth in the hope of winning one.
DC-Digital's 'TV Pon Fone' also generated attention from patrons as they wanted to see how they could get cable television on their cellular phones.
Entertainment wise, DJ Venom of Nationwide FM provided music for the event, playing songs like Voicemail's Nuh Behaviour and Stein's Work Mi A Look.
Performances from Digicel Rising Stars contestants also had the crowd excited, each contestant reminding the crowd of their voting number after performing. This performance segment was hosted by Kiki.
Dancehall diva, Tifa, later gave a special performance singing hits like Certified Diva, Reject, Bottom of the Barrel and Crawny Gal.
Other booths at the show included, The Gleaner Company, Kia Motors, Digiview, Intec Global Systems and Geddes Refrigeration Limited.
