Human rights groups outraged at police shooting in Bucksfield
Statements of shock, outrage and condemnation have come in following footage shown on Friday night on TVJ of the shooting of a man by the police in Bucksfield, St. Ann.
Three members of the Force have been arrested in connection with the incident and are scheduled to be interrogated over the weekend.
Human rights lobby group, Jamaican for Justice (JFJ) says it is horrified by the incident.
Not unusual
At the same time, Executive Director Dr. Carolyn Gomes, says incidents such the Bucksfield shooting are not unusual.
The Commissioner of Police ordered the arrest of the three policemen after viewing a videotape of the shooting incident shown on TVJ's Prime Time News.
The tape contradicted the official police version of the incident from the Constabulary Communications Network (CCN).
The man shot has been identified Ian Lloyd better known as Chin Sing.
He was said to be a suspect in the murder of his common law wife Loveta Wilson.
Inconsistencies
The official report from the CCN said on Thursday afternoon, Ching Sing attacked the police after fatally stabbing his wife and they shot him.
He died later at hospital.
But the videotape of the incident showed Ching Sing lying on the ground when he was beaten with a baton by a uniformed policeman and later shot by another cop, in full view of witnesses.
Public callousness
And Families Against State Terrorism (FAST) says it is shocked that civilians were heard on the videotape encouraging the cop to shoot an unarmed man.
Convenor, Yvonne McCalla Sobers, says it shows the level of callousness in the society.
And Mrs. McCalla says the Bucksfield incident also raises serious questions about the system through which the police report on shootings involving members of the Force.
Interrogations
Personnel from the Bureau of Special Investigations have interviewed one of the three cops arrested for the fatal shooting of Ching Sing.
A statement from the Police High Command says the other policemen will be interviewed during the course of the weekend.
The Police are also asking members of the public who witnessed the incident in Bucksfield, St. Ann to assist the process by providing information.
