A Chinese wholesaler who was last month arrested for breaches of the Customs Act and Intellectual Property Laws has been ordered to pay millions of dollars.
Jing He, the owner of Jing’s Wholesale located at the Half Way Tree Mall in Kingston was on Monday fined $7.2 million after pleading guilty to breaching the Customs Act.
Mr. Jing was arrested and charged after he was found in possession of eight cases of illegal cigarettes including a quantity of bootleg Craven A brand.
He was also found with bleaching creams at his home on Begonia Drive in Mona, St. Andrew.
In addition, he was charged and found guilty of breaches of the Pharmacy and Trade Marks Act.
The Customs Department and the police have been targeting the illicit trade in cigarettes, alcohol and other products in order to protect government revenues.
