Arnett Gardens climbed out of the Digicel Premier League relegation zone with a 1-0 victory over relegation-troubled Portmore United, in a Digicel Premier League (DPL) rescheduled match at the Ferdie Neita Park yesterday.
It was the Junglists second victory in four days. The win pushed Arnett from the bottom of the 12-team standings to 10th with 29 points. Portmore slipped to last place on 27 points, and are partnered in the relegation zone by Humble Lions, who are on 28.
Arnett's goal came in the 54th minute when towering forward Newton Sterling scored from point-blank range, benefiting from Kevin Wilson's pass from the left flank. Sterling had also netted Arnett's goal in a 1-0 win against Rivoli United at the Spanish Town Prison Oval on Sunday.
Arnett's goal forced Portmore to immediately make attacking changes. Coach Neville Bell took out starters Gary McIntosh and Steve Morrissey and brought on veteran striker Roen Nelson and youngster Tremaine Stewart. However, they couldn't score due to resolute defending from Arnett Gardens and below-par shooting.
Portmore's best chance of the second half was wasted by defender Adrian Reid, who went for power instead of placement and put the ball wide of the right upright, much to the dismay of the home fans.
Arnett's coach Wayne Fair-clough, was pleased with the win. "The (Arnett) community is elated (with the win), and we the players and coaches are also elated. It is a morale-boosting victory for us. We defended stoutly, Portmore also defended well, but we came away with the lone goal."
Portmore coach Neville Bell bemoaned his team's woeful shooting.
"For the last 25 minutes of the game we camped out in the Arnett half, we just did not get the goal," Bell said. "I thought it was a pretty good game for two teams at the bottom of the standings. Arnett wanted the win, we wanted the win. Congrats to Arnett."
In the day's other rescheduled game Harbour View beat St Georges 3-1.
