THE excellent season of Jamaica's Nesta Carter in the 100 metres continued yesterday at the Van Damme Samsung Diamond.

League in Brussell, Belgium, as he raced to personal best of 9.85 seconds finishing second to the United States' Tyson Gay.

Gay won the event in 9.79 seconds. Carter, who was clocking his third sub-10 second time this season following his earlier best of 9.86 at the Nottwill meet and 9.96 seconds at the Berlin meet, once again showed his vast improvement.

Carter's impressive run came in a high-class field which included three other Jamaicans in Yohan Blake, Mario Forsythe and World Junior 100 metres champion Dexter Lee, along with Antigua's Daniel Bailey, Trinidad and Tobago's Richard Thompson and the United States' Trell Kimmons.

While Gay, the world leader in the event, was the favourite, it was the clash between Carter and Blake, which generated a lot of interest locally. Blake who is also in great form this season, was hoping to score the first win over his countryman and in the process earn a psychological advantage going into next year.

poor start

Carter once again used his explosive start to get away from the field, leading for some 80 metres before being overtaken by a slow-starting Gay, who clocked the second-fastest time of the year, following his season best and world-leading 9.78 seconds a few weeks ago. Blake, who was also off to a poor start, once again failed to get back to Carter and had to settle for third in 9.91 seconds. His training partner Bailey was fourth in 10.09 seconds. Forsythe (10.12) and Lee (10.21) in the event finished sixth and eight, respectively.

World Championships representative Allodin Fothergill warmed up for the October Commonwealth Games with a third-place finish in the men's 400 metres, clocking 45.44 seconds, Costa Rica's Nery Brenes, the Senior Pan Am Games champion, clocked his second sub-45 second time of the season, winning in 44.92, ahead of Belgium's Jonathan Borlee in 45.27 seconds.

Two other Jamaicans in Dorian Scott and Korene Hinds failed to sparkle at the meet. Scott had a ninth-place finish in the men's shot put with 19.20 metres, while Hinds finished ninth and last in the women's 3000 metres steeple chase in 9:54.37.

Double Diamond League winner Allison Felix, who has only lost once this season, beaten in the women's 200 metres by Jamaica's Veronica Campbell-Brown at the Adidas Diamond League meet in New York
, romped to victory in the half-lap event in 22.61 seconds with countrywoman Shalonda Soloman finishing a close second in 22.70 seconds.
