KSAC preparing May Pen Cemetery for burials May-Pen-Cemetery

The Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation (KSAC) has started making arrangements for the burial of persons who died during the West Kingston incursion.

Mayor of Kingston, Desmond McKenzie, told RJR News that a section of the May Pen Cemetery is being prepared for the graves.

Additionally, he says the KSAC will consider assisting in the burial of those bodies which have not been identified.

“It will not be free of cost but we will deal these issues as they arrive,” Mayor McKenzie said.

Montague & McKenzie tour May Pen Cemetery

And the mayor of Kingston and Robert Montague, State Minister for Local Government, led a tour of the May Pen Cemetery Tuesday morning.

This tour preceded the start of a major clean-up exercise at the cemetery which is expected to cost $4 million.

According to Mayor McKenzie who spoke with RJR News before the tour, this was part of the redevelopment plan for downtown Kingston.

“The Minister is coming to have a first hand look at the condition of the cemetery and to see where we go from here after this initial cleanup. We feel that it’s important that we address all the (issues relating to) the May Pen Cemetery which have been of concern to the security forces … we’re going to try and bring it up to a manageable position,” he said.
