Some higglers in downtown, Kingston, are accusing the police of demanding sexual favours in return for confiscated items.
The higglers say after their goods are taken the cops tell them if they are to be returned without them being charged, they must have sex with them.
One higgler, Yolanda Heavens*, said they are afraid to make an official report about the practice, because she fears for her life.
"If you try to report them, they run you out of the office and they target you as well ... They will come in plain clothes and target you," she said.
She said on several occasions policemen have asked her for sex in return for items taken from her.
imprisonment
Heavens said while she has either chosen to go to court or has lost her goods, a number of her colleagues have had to submit to the officers because of the fear of the court room and imprisonment.
"Majority of the higglers do not go to court because they are having sex with the police," she said.
Another higgler said one policeman was so determined to have sex with her, he visited her home to make the exchange. She refused the offer and had to attend court.
Police are aware of the allegations. One officer said however, they have not yet launched an investigation into the matter since there has not been an official report.
The officer said however, this is an issue that the police are interested in investigating.
Heavens and others told THE WEEKEND STAR they made attempts to report the matter, but were chased from the police station by officers familiar with their faces.
The higglers are seeking the intervention of higher ranked police officers, to assist them. They said despite their means of survival, they deserve to be treated like humans.
