Spencer clinches Diamond League Additi10
Kaliese Spencer of Jamaica wins the 400m women's hurdles at the Herculis International Athletics Meeting, at the Louis II Stadium in Monaco, yesterday - AP

THERE were two impressive wins for Jamaica athletes at yesterday's penultimate Diamond League meet in Zurich as women's 400 metres hurdler Kaliese Spencer and Olympic 200-metre gold medallist Veronica Campbell-Brown had contrasting victories.

The in-form Spencer, competing in the first track final, gave the country the first of two wins, as she kept her good form in the event by scoring an impressive runaway victory in a season-best 53.33 seconds.

Spencer was winning her fourth consecutive race and actually sealed the title as Diamond League champion. The athlete accumulated eight points to push her tally to 24 which gives her a 12-point cushion over the absent United States Lashinda Demus going into the Brussells meet next week.

Campbell-Brown after a long absence from the Diamond League meets returned to her winning ways after a nail-biting finish over the United States' Carmelita Jeter in the women's 100 metres. With both athletes tied at one win apiece in their clashes so far this season, it took the photo-finish camera to decide the winner at the end.

Campbell-Brown win

The Jamaican, who has improved on her start this season, used that to score the win as Jeter was left in the blocks with Campbell-Brown taking the early lead. The Jamaican held on for the win despite Jeter closing strongly as both touched the finishing line simultaneously in 10.89 seconds, with Campbell-Brown getting the win. The United States' Marshavet Myers also went under 11 seconds, finishing third in 10.97 seconds as Jamaica's Sherone Simpson finished fifth in 11.18 seconds.

There were top-two finishes for Yohan Blake, Jermaine Gonzales, Dwight Thomas and the men's 4x100 metres relay team.

Gonzales once again had to play second fiddle to the United States Jeremy Wariner in the men's 400 metres as the American raced to a world-leading time of 44.13 seconds.

Gonzales finished second in 44.51 seconds with the United States' Angello Taylor finishing third in 44.72 seconds. Jamaica Ricardo Chambers also went under 45 second, finishing fourth in 44.96 seconds.

The expected 200-metre clash between Jamaica Blake and the United States' Walter Dix did not materialise as the American was a no-show. Blake, who was favoured to win the event, got off to a terrible start and although leading on the straightway was overtaken by the fast-finishing Wallace Spearmon, who turned in a season-best 19.79 seconds for the win. Blake had to settle for second in a respectable 19.86 seconds as the other Jamaican in the event, Steve Mullings, was fourth in 20.11 seconds.

World Championships 110 metres hurdles finalist Thomas was also in good form as he was beaten by world leader David Oliver of the United States in the men's 110 metres hurdles. The American raced to an impressive 12.93 seconds for the win as Thomas took second in 13.25 seconds.
